The Outrun
Amy's autobiographical account of growing up in the Orkney Islands, escaping to London, getting addicted to alcohol and screwing up her life, and then returning to Orkney to try and find stability and meaning from it all. Her dad was bipolar, and her mum was slightly nutty on the religious front, so she had a lot of hurdles to overcome, but swimming in the icy sea and counting corncrakes for the RSPB helped counteract all that.
Lots of interesting detail on recovering from alcoholism and life on a desolate but beautiful and remote Scottish island.
