Pigeon English
This story is told by Harrison, an 11 year old immigrant from Ghana growing up with his mum and his sister on a London estate. A boy is murdered near his home and he and his friend decide to investigate, looking for clues and collecting fingerprints. Their investigations bring them into real danger though as they become suspicious of the local gang - the Dale Farm Crew. So far he has managed to keep out of too much trouble, partly because he is the second-fastest runner in his year.
This was excellent. Harrison sounds like a nice kid in a troubled place. His greatest thrill is to run fast in a new pair of trainers, and yet his natural curiosity and naivety takes him innocently into a world of trouble.
