Snow in August
The story of Michael Devlin, Irish-American growing up in Brooklyn with his widowed mother in the 50's. He struggles to cope after witnessing the local villain beating up a neighbourhood Jewish shopkeeper, but befriends a local rabbi, and learns that knowledge, understanding and compassion are more likely to solve the local problems of prejudice and violence rather than brute strength. Having said that, there is a good bit of magic with a golem near the end, who beats up the baddies. Hooray!
Brilliant. Written in a lovely simple style, this made me cry loads, although I was off sick with giardia and carpal tunnel syndrome, so feeling a bit vulnerable anyway. Terrific.
