Mary Barton
Mary, the beautiful daughter of an impoverished trades union weaver man in 19th century Manchester, fancies improving her lot by marrying rich Harry Carson. But, after leading Harry on, she realises her childhood sweetheart is her one true love. Oops. Meanwhile, her father, in desperation at the dreadful lot of the poor, takes action against the the ensuing trial the sweetheart is accused of murder...
Really good, once I got into it, took me three or four attempts, as I kept resorting to something easier. Bit grim and gritty of course, but that's the industrial north for you I suppose.
