Jane, a gifted nurse, beloved daughter of a doctor in Bath, becomes engaged to the doctor's colleague, but realises she wants to pursue her dreams, not settle down into what would certainly be a stifling marriage. She has also met the alluring and beautiful Julietta who tempts her away and with whom Jane falls madly in love. There is also a Borneo thread to the story.
