Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler, the American civil war and the following restoration, life on a southern cotton plantation and, of course, slavery. Lots of big themes and it is pretty racist.

The characters are racist of course but also the book itself - which means the author too. Lots of debate available on the internet.
