Harrer relates the history of mountain climbing on the North Face of the Eiger in all its grisly detail, including his team's first successful attempt in 1938.

Interesting and sometimes chilling historical tales of the climbs and (usually) the subsequent rescue attempts during a fascinating evolutionary period of mountaineering techniques and philosophy. Just occasionally the language seemed very clumsy - maybe the fault of the translation.
