Bloke goes off to Gateway, a Heechee artefact where you can travel in a Heechee ship which may take you to death or riches. He comes back to Earth a bit scarred though, following a few missions, the final one producing lots of money but also the loss of his colleagues...

Hmmm, was ok I suppose, but a bit clunky and the Sigfrid analyst machine thing seemed like just a gimmick right from the start.
