In 1859 the Locke family arrive in Canterbury, New Zealand, escaping an abusive husband/father in Australia. They have to work hard to scrape a living, but gradually they learn how to make the most of their resources and together they manage to make a home.

Very interesting and lovely writing - by Marae's mother!
