Ye Wenjie watches her scientist father beaten and killed during a re-education session of the Chinese revolution, but ends up working at a secret military installation sending radio signals out into the galaxy. Contact with aliens is made, but their world system is in peril and they are seeking a new home.

Great, really good book, thoroughly enjoyed it. Originally published in 2008 in China, the English translation was published in 2014.
