Eleven Minutes LateMatthew, cricket writer in the Guardian, is also fond of trains, and writes this history of the development of the British train network, with a few sort of nostalgic, humorous anecdotes sprinkled throughout. Although, in fact, he is pretty realistic about whether there really was a 'Golden Age' etc.

Quite good, especially when he gets into the politics of how all those decisions to build/not build, close/open sell-off/re-nationalise were made (or not made). Entertaining and interesting.
