Shuggie BainThe story of Shuggie's childhood, growing up gay in a Glasgow housing project in the 70's and 80's. Almost completely broken family, sort of held together by Agnes, alcoholic mother, struggling with poverty and a sequence of men, some of whom stick around longer than others. But Shuggie loves his mum and sticks with her through trauma after trauma in the hope he can save her, or help her save herself one day.

Winner of the 2020 Booker prize, I was really looking forward to this but almost stopped reading it a couple of times. Pleased I persevered though, as there is a glimmer of hope towards the end. Lots of unrelenting poverty, alcoholism, bullying and general grimness before that though.
