The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and ClayJosef Kavalier, a would-be magician-escape artist, flees from his home in Czechoslovakia one step ahead of the Nazis and finds himself living at his aunt's house in New York. There he teams up with Sammy Clay, his cousin and the pair invent a character 'The Escapist' for the nascent comic book industry. Josef finds love and successful work but constantly fears for his family left behind in Hitler's Europe. Eventually Josef realises he needs to be more directly involved with the war effort against the Nazis and he goes to Canada to volunteer for the RAF but ends up fighting a strange war in the Antarctic. After the war the cousins meet again but lives have changed irrevocably.

Brilliant story, really solid characters all set against a fascinating background of the early years of the comic book industry. This one recommended by Christina, my IVIG nurse at Auckland hospital, who seems to read a lot.
