Doomsday Book
It is 2054 and academics at Oxford University are using a time machine to go back in time and do research. A student, Kivrin, persuades her tutor to send her back to 1320 Oxford, despite the risks associated with the plague, which was known to have hit the area some years later. Slippage in the time machine operation put Kivrin right into the middle of the Black Death period, while her colleagues in 2054 Oxford battle to rescue her in the face of a modern outbreak of a virulent and deadly flu virus.
Pretty good story, although the whole thing felt very bleak and austere. I thought future Oxford she didn't get very well either - it seemed quite old fashioned (eg no mobile phones).
