The Underground Railroad
The story of Cora, a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia who escapes the violent regime under which she is forced to work. Travelling north via the underground railroad she hopes to find somewhere she can live a life of her own and meets various people who help or hinder her progress. Pursued always by Ridgeway, the relentless slavecatcher.
Excellent, really good chase story and great characters, with loads of good history too. Although apparently the railroad itself wasn't real. Must be a metaphor I suppose. And it is on the 2017 Booker shortlist.

The Nickel Boys
Elwood is a smart kid, brought up by his Grandma, taught the message of Dr Martin Luther King, and aiming for college. But fate sends him unfairly to reform school, the Nickel Academy, where he is abused, mistreated and has to grow up fast. Boys are viciously beaten, sometimes to death, for rule-breaking, but Elwood, assisted by his friend and fellow inmate Turner, realises his only hope is to attempt an escape, and together he and Turner make a run for it.
Fabulous book, great story, great characters and a brilliant twist.
