Alien burial mound is disturbed by a simple but well meaning country boy who then brings trouble to his village. The aliens were kind of like dogs I think.

Kids book, OK, maybe early Westall? (or late - have just looked up publication date!)

Chas McGill is a couple of years older than when he found the machine gun, and is now rebelling against his (very silly) mum, trying to decide if he likes posh Sheila, and on top of all that searching for the mysterious spy in Garmouth who is passing shipping secrets to German U-boats.

Excellent story, lots of good little threads, and super characters. Must re-read 'The Machine Gunners'

Chas McGill, school boy, is an avid collector of war souvenirs, mostly fragments of shell cases, but occasionally something better comes along. But even he never expected to get his hands on the machine gun from a downed German bomber. Together with his motley crew of friends, thrust together by circumstance, he prepares to take on the might of the German forces.

Great story with fabulous characters, I read this many times as a kid. I remembered most of it but had the details of the fight between Chas and Boddser wrong.
