It is 1940 and Emmeline has ambitions to be a war correspondent but ends up with a job as assistant to Mrs Bird, agony aunt for a women's magazine. Dodging Luftwaffe bombs while dealing with cantankerous Mrs Bird, who refuses to answer any reader queries involving any form of unpleasantness, she risks her job and her friendships by responding secretly to some of her reader's problems.
