The Big Sky
Starting in 1830 the story follows the fortunes of a young man, Boone, who runs away from his home and escapes to the Western frontier, with ambitions to become a mountain man - trapping for fur, trading, and dealing with the Indians.
Pretty good, enjoyable read, nice writing. Good balance of exciting story but realistic too. He won the Pulitzer for the second one in the series The Way West, so I will have to read that one next. A recommendation from Mark at work.

The Way West
Dick Summers pilots a group of settlers from Missouri to Oregon in 1846. They have some adventures on the way.
OK, but maybe a little slow and ponderous. Sequel to The Big Sky
